A bit of my story

I’m Timarie Diehl, though most people call me Tim! I’m a botanist and organic farmer, and I’ve spent the last decade learning how to grow food in a way that’s practical, beautiful, and good for the earth. After studying botany and environmental studies at Connecticut College, I worked on organic farms across the U.S. (including time at Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture) and later helped families build and care for gardens in the Chicago area.

Somewhere along the way, I realized the part I loved most wasn’t big agriculture — it was small-scale gardens at home. The kind where kids pull the first carrot of the season with glee and adults go, “Wait… we grew this?!” I’m good at turning the “science-y” parts (sun, soil, timing, pests) into simple, doable steps — so you feel confident, not overwhelmed.

Now I’m back home in New Jersey, helping families and organizations grow food where they live. My work is grounded in a bigger “why,” too: growing at home helps shrink food waste, shortens the supply chain, brings people outside, and turns little patches of lawn into spaces that support biodiversity. I also serve as Chair of my local Environmental Commission, so climate education and community impact are part of my everyday life — and I bring that energy into every garden I help build.

A few things to know

  • Botanist + environmental studies background (Connecticut College)

  • Trained on organic farms, including Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture

  • Chair, Somerville Environmental Commission (local sustainability + education work)

  • Garden plans are customized to your space and what your household actually eats

“It never feels like a lesson, but my kids are learning constantly!”

“Tim doesn’t just “do” our garden—she runs it. Season to season, plan to harvest, chaos to calm. Our garden would 100% be an overgrown science experiment without her, and instead it’s thriving, productive, and honestly kind of magical.

But the real miracle? My four boys. Outside. Voluntarily. Learning. And loving it.

They call her “the garden lady,” which is basically the highest honor, and they light up when she’s here. She teaches them how food grows, how soil works, why bugs matter, and—without a single lecture—how to slow down and be present outdoors. No screens. No battles. Just dirt, curiosity, and joy.

She somehow balances expert-level garden planning and maintenance with patience, humor, and genuine education. It never feels like a lesson, but my kids are learning constantly. Meanwhile, I get a functioning garden and children who are happily occupied outside. Savior? Lifesaver? Possibly wizard.

If you want a beautiful, well-run garden and kids who think learning outside is the best thing ever, stop looking. She’s it.

Highly recommend—especially if you like fresh air, thriving plants, and fewer arguments about iPads.
